Job burnout is officially recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2019 as an occupational phenomenon. Burnout is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. According to the WHO, it is characterized by: 1)feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; 2) increased mental distance from one’s job; 3) or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job; and reduced professional efficacy. Burnout refers specifically to phenomenon in the occupational context and should not be applied to describe experiences in other areas of life.” Burnout can affect not only your work, but also your relationships and your health. It’s important to know what burnout is and its symptoms so you can spot them quickly and take steps to intervene.
